Human Fountain

In this clip, the dancers of choreographer Elizabeth Streb’s Extreme Action dance company simulate the motion of a water fountain by hurling themselves off an enormous scaffolding. Streb’s work may be some of the most physically punishing choreography that is being produced today, and it never fails to surprise and fascinate audiences.

Streb’s dances feature risky, demanding, and high-impact physicality. What is interesting is that her work highlights, rather than disguises the punishing nature of the movement, and yet there is still a great deal of grace in the visual experience. That doesn’t keep me from cringing while watching this footage, though…
